City within City

The task reflects actual occasions of cities, specifically of Brno. The main aim is finding the most appropriate utilization of unused place defined by streets (Milady Horakova, Francouzska and Cernopolni). Relevant part of analyzing the place most convinced the design, these papers use public materials. Urban design enhance this location with new functions, specially residential, commercial and public space. Gentrification is one of the most interesting opportunities for designing enrichment of this location. The design of choosen objects seek for quality, sustainable, modern living in city with defined space.

There's black and white, day and night, good and evil, yin and yang. It all just balances itself out.

The bachelor's thesis "There's Black and White, Day and Night, Good and Evil, Ying and Yang" follows the three-year existence of the collective "Ugly Brno" and its work, which is based on the still current, local phenomenon of redesigning of advertising banners and shields in the context of small businesses located in the Brno city center. Specifically, it focuses on emerging designs combining black and white. The output of this bachelor's thesis is a video – a fictional interview in which Black and White are personified as two confident, eccentric personalities, quasi-experts in today's visual culture and the ultimate guarantors of taste, who conquered the city of Brno with their realizations. The objective of this thesis is to reveal the mythology behind the popularity of black and white combination in the context of visual culture, particularly in graphic design and its connection to the problematics of gentrification and capitalism. Another objective is to use sarcasm and irony to create a reflection of a culture whose values are elitism, workaholism, perfectionism, disregard for alternatives and an emphasis on efficiency. Why is it that in such a culture, black and white has gained more and more popularity than ever before?

The Impact of Local Social Composition of the Neighbourhood on the Real Estates Value in a Selected Locality of the City of Zlín

The aim of this proposal is socialogical analysis, interpretation, construction and urbanistic recommendation related to an impact of social changes in specific neighborhood on life standarts and real estates‘ costs in the area. Social changes could be negative, such as social degradation of certain area, worsening of quality of the environment, worsening relationships and also social deviation (for example criminality). Positive changes represents mostly gentrification, which includes positive changes of social and tangible environment. These are followed by price encrease of life standarts which is displacing old settlers. In our experience these areas of life standarts and real estates prices are linked and it is possible to use synergistic influence of changes to adjust tangible and social environment.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá procesem gentrifikace ve dvou katastrálních územích Brna – Židenice a Zábrdovice. Na základě teoretických poznatků o gentrifikaci předpokládáme, že tento proces byl v těchto dvou katastrálních územích zahájen v nedávné době. Tento předpoklad vychází z vlastního pozorování autorky. Teoretická část diplomové práce shrnuje, co je gentrifikace, kdy se poprvé objevila, jaká jsou její fáze a pozitivní i negativní důsledky. Praktická část se zaměřuje pouze na vybraná katastrální území, která jsou porovnána se srovnatelnými katastrálními územími Maloměřice a Trnitá. Výzkum se zaměřuje na vývoj cen nemovitých věcí, brownfieldy a rekonstrukce objektů na nich stojících, novostavby či úpravy pozemků, které nejsou označeny jako brownfieldy, sociodemografickou strukturu a vývoj kriminality ve vybraných oblastech. Cílem praktické části je dokázat, že proces gentrifikace již začal.

Residents' Perceptions of Gentrification and Related Changes: a Study of Smíchov and Karlín

Gentrification is an urban process gone global with many permutations and local specifics. This master's thesis analyses how residents are perceiving gentrification in rapidly developing, post- industrial, inner-city neighbourhoods of Prague - Smíchov and Karlín. The thesis is based on the concept of gentrification as planetary phenomenon that is anchored in a post-socialist context of contemporary Prague. The integral process of displacement is understood as direct but also symbolic, as an attachment to one's neighbourhood. Perception, an individual's filter of understanding and dealing with the world, is used to capture nuances, experiences, and feelings. Using interviews, the thesis seeks to answer the following questions using the underutilized perceptions of regular citizens. How are residents perceiving gentrification and the related changes? Where are residents placing gentrification? Are these findings the same in Smíchov and Karlín or are there differences in the perceptions? Gentrification and displacement are palpable urban processes that the respondents perceive as having changed the neighbourhoods in an impactful way. More-than-human cohabitation: gentrification, displacement and belonging Linda Dědková This thesis examines displacement and gentrification, using the example of the department store Karstadt at Hermannplatz in Berlin. The ecofeminist critique of the binary division between nature and culture is central to my argument that gentrification and displacement are influenced by complex natural-cultural processes. The thesis utilizes a combination of ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and affective reading of historical materials to investigate the historical interlinks between the construction of the Karstadt department store in the 1920s and the present-day situation. I argue that gentrification surpasses the architectural and demographic transformation of a neighborhood and is often rooted in intersectional oppression. Furthermore, displacement encompasses intricate more-than-human relations and processes, such as ways of shopping, and destroys complex local ecologies. Lastly, the agency of materials has a direct influence on the transformation of neighborhoods. The findings demonstrate that non-human agents can play crucial and dynamic roles in the interconnected economic, cultural, and ecological processes that facilitate gentrification. Gentrification of the inner city of Český Krumlov

The bachelor´s thesis explores, identifies and analyses eventual manifestations of gentrification in the Inner city of Český Krumlov. Part of the thesis is an outline of theoretical approaches in the area of gentrification. The analytical part is derived from different, but overlapping approaches: gentrification as a class colonization, gentrification as a capital investment, gentrification and social disparities. As a prerequisite for confirming the course of gentrification, the creation of a rent gap in the examined area is analyzed. Another identifier of the course of the process in the area is the displacement of the original inhabitants.

Demographic ageing and the city: seniors in Karlín

The following thesis addresses the process of growing old in an urban environment. It concentrates on the factors, which infulence the quality of senior citizens' lives and how they do it. The main focus is put on the city disticts that are subject to dynamic changes caused by the processes of post-socialist transformations, revitalization and gentrification. The thesis explores the problems but also the benefits, which these changes can bring to elderly citizens' every day lives. Looking for the answers to these questions is based on the case study of a city district in Prague - Karlín. The qualitative research have been done by semistructured interviews with local senior citizens. It has shown possible perception of some aspects of environment of Karlin and changes of this environment.

It used to be a village, we knew each other: qualitative research on changes in the Lesser Town from the perspective of residents

This diploma thesis is about residents who live in the Lesser Town, the historic center of Prague. It focuses on the changes perceived by residents that took place during their lifetime. Work is based on literature and qualitative research in the form of biographical interviews. The theoretical part deals with the concepts of identity, tourism, gentrification, genius loci and ageing which are essential for understanding the changes identified in the analytical part. The analytical part is divided into seven units: changes of the atmosphere of the Lesser Town, its inhabitants, living environment, housing stock, changes of people who have shared their stories with me and more global changes that had influenced the Lesser Town. The work also describes which problems and benefits related to life in the Lesser Town do communication partners perceive.
